Use communication strategies to umpire cricket at a local or district level

Unit Descriptor This unit has been developed for the Sport Industry Training Package. This unit covers the knowledge and skills required to successfully utilise communication strategies required to umpire a cricket game at a local or district level.

1 . Use oral communication skills

  1. Convey decisions to players through clear verbal information

  2. Use the voice effectively to convey decisions

  3. Listen to players, scorers and other umpires and officials and respond to accordingly at a local or district level

  4. Interact with players and other officials in a friendly and professional manner

  5. Identify the rules and regulations for a given situation

2 . Use signals

  1. Use signals associated with cricket to convey an explanation of decisions to players, scorers, coachers, timekeepers and spectators

  2. Interpret signals accurately from other umpires and officials

3 . Use auditory devices

  1. Perform the range of communication strategies by using auditory devices and equipment , if applicable

4 . Make effective use of body language

  1. Use an appropriate posture for specific situations when interacting with others

  2. Use firm, confident signals and movements when umpiring

  3. Make eye contact when communicating with others

5 . Receive feedback

  1. Receive feedback provided by others in a rational and constructive manner

  2. Implement changes to improve the quality of umpiring based on formal feedback provided by appointed assessors and advisers

  3. Implement changes to improve the quality of umpiring based on informal discussions with players, other umpires and officials, administrators, coaches and team managers

  4. Respond to feedback provided from other officials positively
